“Dear Dr. Mulawka,

I hope this is going to be helpful for your website. These are some of the activities that I couldn't have done before my knee surgery. I would walk very gingerly before the surgery, because my knees felt as if they were crumbling.

At a women's retreat, just 3 weeks after surgery, I was square dancing for an hour. Not any thought about it. Just having a lot of fun.

When my new knees were 7 months and 3 months old I decided to take a step of faith. I promised a young gal I would take her with me on a mission trip. Not thinking it would really happen, or at least not that quickly. God guided my every step.

This picture was at a mission trip to the Dominican Republic: 10 days.

1. Joining a team of 10 - building a church.

2. Checking my own luggage at customs - last time I went I was in a wheel chair in the airport.

3. I climbed up 2 flights of stairs for our meals.

4. Climbed up 4 flights of stairs for our debriefing each night.

5. Baby-sat, gave out water to workers, helped serve the people, walked the rough terrain of the work site, walked in the village to visit the kids, and about a mile to visit families in the countryside, but mostly I walked around and did photography, and singing with the people. We had many interpreters. We visited the old city, and shopped too. Much walking!!

Thank you and all of those who helped with surgery, therapy, and encouragement, and prayers. God was very faithful. Forever grateful.

P.S. Thanks for your support. I was so blessed by so many.”

  • Knee Replacement and Leg Straightening

“Dr. Mulawka replaced my right knee and straightened my leg on December 13, 2012. I had terrible pain when I went to see Dr. Mulawka and could hardly walk. At first, he thought I may need to have my right hip replaced again; it was originally done in 2001. After the surgery on my right knee and straightened leg, I healed rapidly.

A year later I am walking very well. My hip is fine as is my right knee and leg are perfect. I have no pain! I can't imagine who would not have Dr. Mulawka replace their knee. His less invasive procedure is fantastic and so is he! I highly recommend Dr. Mulawka! I have already shared this information with many people and will continue to do so.”

“Dr. Mulawka gave me my way of life back.

Before my first knee replacement in May 2009, at age 70, I had constant knee pain. It was difficult to sit or stand for any length of time. Getting in and out of vehicles was a huge problem. I had given up on taking my walks, riding my bike, shopping in large stores and taking long trips.

Being an outside, active person, I missed the walked in the woods on my home in the country. Even mowing my lawn wasn't as fun as it used to be because of the pain while riding the mower. My mail box was at the end of my driveway, so it was no easy task walking up there. Sometimes, I just drove my Jeep to get the mail, or waited to get the mail on the way to town in a day or so.

Dr. Mulawka was recommended to me as a surgeon that could help me "Get My Life Back". I had a series of cortisone shots that did help for a time, but that wasn't the complete answer to be free from pain. So in May of 2009, Dr. Mulawka did a total left knee replacement. I wasn't a bit apprehensive for the surgery, because I knew I had to have the surgery to get back to my normal way of life. I didn't want to be a "house sitter" with pain anymore. My family gave me encouragement and their total support to have the surgery.

I can't say thanks enough for the wonderful care Dr. Mulawka and his staff and the St. Cloud Orthopedic Clinic gave me. I was treated with the utmost care and consideration for comfort, pain and therapy. All of my questions were answered completely so I knew just what was involved in the surgery and my extended care and rehab after surgery.

In August of 2009, after my surgery and 71st birthday, I was introduced to Kayaking with some very special friends. It was a thrill to crawl in a Kayak without pain and take off on the lake. My new hobby with a new knee was the best thing I could have done.

Early in 2011, I started to have a lot of pain in my right knee when I walked. In September of 2011, Dr. Mulawka did some arthroscopy surgery on my knee and told me it would help for a time, but I should be thinking of total replacement. The pain increased over the next several months. I knew I had to have the surgery to become active again.

In December of 2012, I made an appointment with Dr. Mulawka to discuss total right knee replacement in March of 2013. I told him I was ready to get it done. I was tired of the constant pain again and unable to do the things I wanted to do. March 25 was the date set for surgery. At age 73, after total right knee replacement, I could be back to Kayaking by June 2013.

Thanks again to Dr. Mulawka and his staff, I have my way of life back again.”

“Thank you, Dr. Mulawka. You have a long history of getting to know me and my knees. You have demonstrated great care, concern, expertise and an ability to always keep me and my overall health and well being in the forefront.

Together we have traveled a long road to total knee replacement. Your insight and patience encouraged me to work at various options of general knee health over a period of many years. Physical therapy, injections, a support brace and a change in exercise routine are just a few of the options you and I agreed upon to help me maintain a healthy lifestyle before knee replacement surgery.

I have always felt comfortable with your advice. You gave me confidence to ask you questions and share my concerns. You have surrounded yourself with a knowledgeable staff and state-of-the-art facility. I have always left my appointments feeling better than when I came in.

Before replacement surgery my physical lifestyle continued to be compromised. My level of activity was diminishing. Running, racquetball, softball and many other impact sports were not possible because of pain and discomfort. You guided me toward continued active participation, but with new options for remaining physically healthy. I would never have imagined myself participating in yoga, water aerobics, walking or bicycling.

Equally important is that I am able to walk and play with my wife and grandchildren without knee pain. I have found new activities that I enjoy and benefit from.

Thanks to you, since my knee replacement surgery in 2003 I have managed to ride my bicycle in 18-across Minnesota rides for Multiple Sclerosis, bicycled in all 50 states and a number of providences in Canada, completed a 4,000 mile ride across the United States, and have ridden around Lake Superior. All with joy, a sense of wonder, and no knee pain.

I have and will continue to recommend you positively and without reservation to others.”

“Because of you...

I want to say a sincere thank you for great new knees that allowed me to have a wonderful missions experience in Nicaragua. It was a marvelous time and I was able to enjoy it without pain and discomfort. Yes- I climbed a volcano!

Thank you again!”
